New Delhi, Nov 28: Several Shanghai residents were detained by the police on Sunday during a demonstration against the nation’s strict COVID control policies. Since then, the demonstrations have intensified and spread to several locations, including Wuhan, where the pandemic first appeared over three years ago.

Protesters could be seen singing the national anthem in the streets of Shanghai in a video released by the news agency Reuters. Police used physical force to eject demonstrators from the area. Some people were imprisoned and later freed.

On Wulumuqi Road, where a candlelight vigil on Saturday erupted into protests on Sunday, there is a significant police presence.

As resentment over President Xi Jinping’s iconic zero-Covid policy grows, mainland China is experiencing a surge of civil disobedience that hasn’t been seen since he came to power ten years ago.

Ten people were killed in a fire at a residential high-rise building on Thursday in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang region. As a result of videos of the incident being shared on social media, lockdowns were blamed for the fire, which sparked protests.
