New Delhi: Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Friday openly criticised the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for its controversial decision to not organise a farewell for retiring Supreme Court judge Justice Bela M Trivedi. Speaking during a ceremonial bench held in her honour, CJI Gavai said he “deprecated openly” the association’s stand, calling it inappropriate and disrespectful.
CJI calls SCBA’s move ‘unjustified’
Justice Gavai lamented that Justice Trivedi, the 11th woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court bench, deserved recognition for her dedication, fairness, and integrity. “On such an occasion, such a stand ought not to have been taken by the Association,” he said.
While expressing his disappointment, CJI Gavai acknowledged the presence of SCBA President Kapil Sibal and Vice President Rachna Srivastava at the ceremony despite their body’s resolution. He noted that their attendance, along with a full courtroom, reflected the respect Justice Trivedi commanded. “There are different types of judges, but that should not be a factor to deny what ought to have been granted,” he added.
Justice Trivedi’s legacy of service and integrity
Justice Trivedi demitted office ahead of her scheduled retirement on June 9, 2025, due to personal reasons. Elevated to the Supreme Court on August 31, 2021, she was among the record nine judges—including three women—sworn in that day.
Her judicial career began as a trial court judge in Gujarat in 1995, making her elevation to the apex court a rare trajectory. Over her three-decade-long judicial service, she also served as registrar vigilance in the Gujarat High Court and law secretary to the Gujarat government before being appointed as a High Court judge in 2011.
Final words from the Chief Justice
Praising Justice Trivedi’s hard work and fairness, CJI Gavai concluded, “Justice Trivedi, you have been a valuable asset to our judiciary. As you embark on a new journey, I wish you all the best.”
