New Delhi, April 29: NV Ramana, the Chief Justice of India (CJI), today raised the subject of vacancies in high courts and directed the Chief Justices of all 25 high courts to send candidates for elevation as judges as soon as possible.
The Chief Justice of India presented the agenda for the 39th Chief Justices’ Conference in Delhi, which is being convened after a six-year hiatus, and said the “aim and object of today’s conference is to discuss and identify the problems that are affecting the administration of justice”.
He said that in addition to reviewing progress on the resolutions adopted six years ago at the last Chief Justices’ conference, the meeting would also address issues relating to the judiciary, such as high court judge appointments and improving network and connectivity at all court complexes across the country.
“I request the Chief Justices of the high courts, which are still having a number of vacancies, to forward the names for elevation at the earliest,” said the CJI in his welcome address.
The Chief Justice of India also mentioned how, in the last year, the collegiums under his leadership had ensured the appointment of nine new judges to the Supreme Court in one go, as well as ten new chief justices for high courts, and praised his collegium colleagues for their cooperation.
The Chief Justices’ Conference will prioritise the subject of improving IT infrastructure and connectivity at all court complexes across India.
The meeting, which is being attended by two senior Supreme Court judges, justices Uday Umesh Lalit and AM Khanwilkar, will also examine human resources, personnel policy, and the needs of district courts.
The Chief Justices’ Conference will be followed by a joint conference of chief ministers and chief justices, which will be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Vigyan Bhawan here on Saturday.
