CJI Surya Kant Tells PIL Petitioner Not to Take Cockroach Janta Party ‘So Sentimentally’

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday dismissed the urgency around a PIL filed against the Cockroach Janta Party, telling the petitioner not to take the matter so sentimentally and saying the Supreme Court would examine the pleas in due course.

What the PILs Sought

Two PILs were filed in the Supreme Court in connection with the CJP controversy. One sought directions restraining the use of courtroom exchanges for commercial purposes and called for a CBI probe into allegations concerning fake law degrees. The other sought a CBI investigation into the activities of the Cockroach Janta Party, alleging that a distorted and malicious narrative was being pushed to malign the judiciary despite the CJI’s clarification on the original cockroach remark. The CJI observed there was no grave urgency in the matter.

CJI Reiterates His Original Remarks Were Misrepresented

The CJI reiterated that his remarks had been taken out of context, clarifying they were directed at people allegedly entering the legal profession with fake and bogus degrees, not at unemployed youth as widely reported.

CJP Faces Government Crackdown

Meanwhile, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke claimed the movement’s website was taken down on Saturday, accusing the government of dictatorial behaviour. He alleged receiving death threats and said authorities were targeting the satirical movement instead of acting against those responsible for examination irregularities. The platform has crossed 22 million Instagram followers and over one million registered members within a week, with its online petition seeking Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak gaining massive traction.
