New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the death of Noida-based model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma, elevating the case from a state-level investigation into a matter of national judicial scrutiny. A CJI-led bench is expected to hear the matter on Monday as key forensic and investigative processes continue.
How the Case Began
Twisha Sharma, 26, married advocate Samarth Singh in December 2025 and moved to his family home in Katara Hills, Bhopal. She was found dead on May 12. CCTV footage showed her walking toward the terrace, with CPR attempts captured about an hour later, but the footage did not record what happened on the terrace itself, leaving a critical gap in the timeline.
Competing Claims and Key Evidence
While the accused family maintained that Twisha died by suicide, her family alleged sustained dowry harassment and demanded a murder investigation. They pointed to injury marks on her body and cited an alleged final message reading “I am trapped bro. Bas tu mat phasna” as evidence of distress. The initial AIIMS Bhopal postmortem attributed death to hanging but documented multiple antemortem injuries, leading to demands for a second autopsy.
Legal Proceedings and Arrests
An FIR was registered on May 15 under dowry death and harassment provisions against Samarth Singh and his mother, retired district judge Giribala Singh. A six-member SIT was formed. Samarth Singh remained untraceable for several days before finally surrendering at a Jabalpur court and being sent to seven-day police remand. Giribala Singh secured anticipatory bail, though Twisha’s family has challenged it in the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Second Autopsy and CBI Referral
The Madhya Pradesh High Court directed a second postmortem, which was conducted by a four-member AIIMS Delhi medical board. After the second autopsy was completed, Twisha’s body was cremated in Bhopal. The Madhya Pradesh government has recommended a CBI probe into the case, with investigators expected to examine hospital records, WhatsApp conversations, and witness statements.
Where the Case Stands
Three competing narratives remain — the family’s dowry harassment and suspicious death allegation, the accused family’s categorical denial, and the ongoing forensic and judicial process. Central unanswered questions include what happened in the final hours before Twisha’s death, how the injuries were caused, and whether evidence supports suicide, dowry death, or something more serious.
