Chandigarh, March 14: Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab chief minister-designate, announced on Monday that he will quit as a member of parliament.

He has served in the Lok Sabha twice, representing the state’s Sangrur parliamentary constituency.

“Going to Delhi today, I am resigning from the post of Sangrur MP. The people of Sangrur have given me so much love for so many years, thank you. Now that I have the opportunity to serve the whole of Punjab, I promise the people of Sangrur that in a few months their voice will be heard again in the Lok Sabha,” Mann posted on Koo.

On March 16, the 48-year-old AAP leader will be sworn in as Punjab’s chief minister. The ceremony will take place in Nawanshahr district’s Khatkar Kalan, the famed independence fighter Bhagat Singh’s home hamlet.

In the 117-member Punjab assembly, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) romped home with 92 seats. It wiped out both the Congress and the SAD-BSP coalition.

Notably, Mann defeated Congress candidate Dalvir Singh Goldy by 58,206 votes to win the Dhuri assembly seat.
