New Delhi: The Congress party has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of compromising national interest to allegedly protect industrialist Gautam Adani. The sharp criticism comes amid reports from U.S. sources suggesting that the Adani Group is importing LPG from Iran, potentially putting India at odds with international sanctions.
“Modi surrendered to save one man”: Ajay Kumar
Congress spokesperson Ajay Kumar took to X (formerly Twitter) to post a series of allegations. He warned that if the United States and the European Union decide to impose sanctions on India over the alleged LPG imports, Indian companies could be severely impacted, yet there is no discussion in Indian media on this.
“Has one man become more important than India’s future for Narendra Modi?” Kumar asked.
Airports for Adani, media silent: Congress
Kumar cited the 2018 airport privatization policy where experience was not required for bidders — something Congress claims was tailored to benefit Adani. He listed six major airports — Ahmedabad, Mangaluru, Jaipur, Lucknow, Guwahati, and Thiruvananthapuram — handed to Adani, with no media scrutiny.
He also accused the government of pressuring GVK Group through CBI raids, forcing them to hand over Mumbai airport to Adani. He added that public sector banks were turned into Adani’s “ATMs,” citing over ₹40,000 crore in exposure.
On foreign affairs and China
Congress accused Modi of failing to take a firm stand on China, referencing the PM’s earlier meeting with Xi Jinping in 2014, even as Chinese troops reportedly tried to infiltrate Indian borders. Ajay Kumar said Modi avoids even naming China and that the Brahmaputra mega dam in Tibet — a potential threat to Northeast India — hasn’t been addressed publicly by any minister.
Congress draws dramatic comparisons
Kumar compared Modi-Adani’s relationship to Sholay’s Jai-Veeru, suggesting deep and inseparable ties. He also alleged that Indian citizens are learning more about Adani’s deals from foreign newspapers, as Indian media avoids coverage.
In a sarcastic anecdote, Kumar likened Modi’s support for Adani to a father justifying a son’s crimes, hinting that both are complicit.
Key Allegations by Congress:
Adani Group allegedly importing LPG from Iran, risking global sanctions. Airports handed over to Adani without experience requirements. GVK pressured into surrendering Mumbai airport. Indian banks overexposed to Adani Group. Silence over China’s actions and foreign policy failures. PM Modi accused of compromising national sovereignty for corporate interest.
Congress ended the tirade by urging citizens to question the opaque ties between business and government, and warned of long-term damage to India’s democracy and international standing.
