New Delhi, Dec 4: The party’s senior brass convened for the inaugural meeting of the steering committee for the Congress, which was established by party leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday. They discussed important organisational issues as well as the date and location of the party’s plenary session.
Senior leaders P Chidambaram, Anand Sharma, Meira Kumar, and Ambika Soni were present at the meeting, along with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former party leader Sonia Gandhi, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, and their counterparts from Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, respectively, Bhupesh Baghel and Meira Kumar.
Due to the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which is scheduled to enter Rajasthan on Sunday evening, Rahul Gandhi was unable to attend the meeting.
After Kharge assumed leadership in October, the steering committee was established to replace the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the party.
“There is a meeting of the Congress steering committee. Its main purpose is to decide the dates of the plenary session and where it should be held and there will be a discussion on this issue,” AICC general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh told reporters on Saturday.
Several organisational issues would also be discussed during the crucial steering committee meeting, according to party sources.

Soon after Kharge took over as Congress president, all CWC members were included to the steering committee.
The party’s plenary session, which is most likely to take place in February or March of next year, will ratify Kharge’s election as the Congress president, and the dates may be decided at that time. After a gap of 24 years, he is the first non-Gandhi to be elected as the president of the Congress in a direct election for the top party position. The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) plenary meeting would probably draw more than 9,000 delegates.
