New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked Samvidhan Diwas by calling the Constitution a sacred document that has guided India’s progress and empowered citizens to shape the nation’s future. In a letter to the nation, he urged that every individual action should reinforce the Constitution and advance national goals, describing it as a collective responsibility to fulfil the dreams of its framers.
Constitution as the Foundation of India’s Growth
Modi reflected on how the Constitution has created opportunities for every citizen, saying its power enabled a person from a humble and economically disadvantaged background like him to serve as head of government for over 24 years. He called the Constitution Day a moment of pride for every Indian, honouring Dr Rajendra Prasad, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, and all members of the Constituent Assembly for their vision and commitment to democracy.
He highlighted the 75th year of the Constitution, during which Parliament held a special session and launched nationwide programmes that saw record participation.
Milestones and Leaders Who Strengthened National Unity
The Prime Minister remarked that Samvidhan Diwas 2025 is especially significant as it coincides with the 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bhagwan Birsa Munda. He credited Patel’s leadership for the political integration of India and linked his inspiration to the government’s move to abolish Article 370 and 35(A), ensuring full constitutional rights in Jammu & Kashmir.
He stated that Birsa Munda continues to inspire the country’s resolve toward justice and empowerment of tribal communities. Modi also acknowledged major national commemorations — 150 years of Vande Mataram and the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur — as reminders of duty, sacrifice and national pride.
Citizens’ Duties at the Centre of National Progress
Modi emphasised that the Constitution not only grants rights but also stresses fundamental duties through Article 51A. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, he said that rights naturally follow when duties are fully performed.
He asked citizens to embrace voting as a key responsibility, saying young people must be inspired to stay committed to democratic values. He added that decisions India takes today will influence the lives of future generations, especially as the nation moves towards marks like 100 years of independence in 2047 and 100 years of the Constitution in 2049.
