Chennai: The India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several districts across Tamil Nadu as Cyclone ‘Senyar’ intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to impact the state over the next three days, prompting school closures in coastal areas including Rameswaram and heightened preparedness across vulnerable regions.
Cyclone Senyar’s Path and IMD Forecast
The season’s second cyclonic storm, named ‘Senyar’ by the UAE — meaning “lion” — developed after a deep depression intensified over the Strait of Malacca. At 5:30 am on November 26, the cyclone was positioned near 5.0°N, 98.0°E, approximately 100 km east of Kuta Makmur in Indonesia and 260 km southwest of George Town in Malaysia. It is expected to retain cyclonic storm strength for 24 hours, cross the Indonesia coast, and then shift west-southwest before recurving eastward within 48 hours.
Simultaneously, a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and Southeast Sri Lanka is forecast to intensify into a depression within 24 hours and further strengthen into a cyclonic storm by November 27 — an event that will sharply increase rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu.
Rainfall Alerts and Emergency Measures Across the State
According to IMD projections, heavy to very heavy rainfall (12–20 cm) is expected in three delta districts on November 28, followed by severe rainfall across seven districts including Chennai on November 29. Tiruvallur district remains under alert for November 30.
In response to worsening weather conditions, schools in Rameswaram have been closed for Wednesday. Authorities have reinforced coastal surveillance, with officials advising residents in low-lying and coastal belts to monitor weather advisories closely and adhere to safety instructions issued by the administration.
