The title of all-time highest goal scorer in football is hotly debated, and FIFA does not have an official record, although the world governing organisation estimates that Austro-Czech Josef Bican scored 805 goals over a career that spanned 1931 to 1955.
Ronaldo equaled the mark with a spectacular effort from distance in the 12th minute at Old Trafford.
The Portugal international then put United 2-1 up with a tap-in from Jadon Sancho’s clever ball, before emphatically hammering home his third to ignite wild celebrations in the terraces as United won 3-2.
Ronaldo’s hat-trick was his 59th of his career, and his first for United since his return to Old Trafford in 2008. Sporting, United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and the Portugal national team have all scored goals for Ronaldo.
