Ranchi: The World Bank-funded Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (Phase II and III) has received approval for Jharkhand’s participation. The initiative aims to repair, restore, and sustain aging dams in the state, most of which were built between the 1970s and 1980s.

Key Features of the Project

The primary goal of the project is to strengthen dam safety and improve their maintenance, ensuring enhanced safety and additional revenue generation. A total of 19 states and three central agencies are participating in the project, with Jharkhand being one of the beneficiaries. The project will run for 10 years, to be implemented in two phases.

With a total budget of ₹10,211 crore, the financial model has been designed with 70% funding from the World Bankand 30% contribution from state governments.

Benefits for Jharkhand

Under this scheme, 35 dams in Jharkhand will undergo rehabilitation, directly improving dam safety and long-term water management. The upgraded infrastructure is also expected to generate higher revenue through better maintenance and operational efficiency.

The state will enter into a formal agreement with the World Bank to secure the necessary loan, and administrative approval will be obtained for project-related estimates. Following this, the process of availing the loan amount from the World Bank will begin.
