Agartala: India has termed the breach of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission premises in Agartala as “deeply regrettable,” emphasizing that diplomatic and consular properties should remain untargeted under any circumstances.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued the statement following a massive rally held near the mission on Sunday. Protesters condemned the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh and the rising violence against minorities in the neighboring country.
Details of the Incident
Over 50 protesters reportedly entered the mission premises, causing panic among officials and staff. The rally was part of a larger outcry against the treatment of Hindus in Bangladesh, particularly the recent arrest of Mr. Das on sedition charges.
“The incident earlier today of the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala is deeply regrettable. Diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances,” the MEA stated.
Security Measures Intensified
India has taken measures to enhance security at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and its other missions across the country.
The MEA also reiterated India’s concerns over escalating violence against minorities in Bangladesh. “The interim government in Bangladesh must live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities,” the statement added.
Rising Tensions Between India and Bangladesh
Tensions have escalated since the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, assumed power in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster in August. Reports of attacks on Hindus and other minorities have strained bilateral relations.
India has urged Bangladesh to ensure that Mr. Das is treated fairly and transparently.
Attacks on Journalists and Minority Leaders in Bangladesh
The incident follows a series of attacks on minorities and journalists in Bangladesh. Last week, prominent journalist Munni Saha was detained after being surrounded by a radical mob in Dhaka. She was released later, but the event underscores the rising extremism in the country.
