New Delhi, Feb 22: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will now attempt to elect a mayor for the fourth time on Wednesday. The Supreme Court prohibited aldermen (nominated members) from participating in the voting process on Friday, which sparked a new dispute between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the wake of the MCD election results.
The local authority had already made attempts to hold the polls on January 6, January 24, and February 6.
A dispute developed over the order of the oath ceremony and permitting the members selected by LG VK Saxena to vote, which led to fights. As a result, the AAP was unable to name the municipal body’s mayor. This dispute ended the BJP’s 15 years of power over the civic body.
The AAP opposed the decision to hold elections for the positions of mayor, deputy mayor, and members of the standing committee at the same time, claiming that doing so would be against the law and favour the BJP.
The mayoral election is scheduled to take place today as a result of the top court’s ruling; the AAP has nominated Shelly Oberoi, while the BJP has nominated Rekha Gupta. Aaley Mohammed Iqbal of the AAP will compete for the duty seat against Kamal Bagri of the BJP.
