New Delhi, Feb 24: Newly elected Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi declared on Friday that new elections would be held to select six individuals for the Standing Committee of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD).
This follows an altercation on Wednesday between councillors from the AAP and the BJP over how the Standing Committee election was conducted.
Council members from the BJP criticised Mayor Shelly Oberoi’s decision to permit phones in the voting booth and called for new elections.
As of right now, phones will not be permitted during voting, according to Shelly Oberoi. The mayor’s declaration was warmly received by BJP council members, who celebrated it as a win. Before the election, BJP council members shouted on Mayor Shelly Oberoi to visit the civic centre from the MCD House.
The MCD House session was scheduled to start at 10 am, but Mayor Shelly Oberoi and the AAP councillors were late, prompting the BJP councillors to hoist protest signs. The BJP council members shouted at the House while flashing their watches.
AAP leaders are optimistic that their candidates will prevail in the contest for the six seats on the Standing Committee. Atishi Singh, a party MLA, attacked the BJP and predicted that the AAP will win the election.
