Dhanbad, Dec 31: Continuing its campaign against the illegal sale and supply of banned plastic bags, Dhanbad Municipal Corporation (DMC) raided the Barwadda area based Krishi Bazar Samiti and seized 30 quintals of banned single-use plastic bags.
The high-level team of DMC comprising city manager Kunal Kumar Singh, Food inspector Anil Kumar, Randhir Verma Shabbir Alam and Rajnish Lal raided wholesale traders Sitaram Barnbal, Pintoo Kumar Sab, Ranjan Kumar and seized 30 quintals of banned plastic bags including thermocol plates, plastic glasses and other single-use items.
DMC officials said that as per government of India guidelines plastic bags less than 100 microns thick has been banned from December 2022. The earlier ban was on 75 microns thickness.
Recovery of 30 quintals of banned plastic bags is ever highest in the Dhanbad district so far. Earlier in 2019, DMC had seized plastic bags in large quantities from the Jharia market, stored in a warehouse for circulation in the district.
Dhanbad Town Commissioner Satyendra Kumar, who has launched a special drive against banned plastic bags said that fines would be fixed on traders after completing the chart of recovery items.
“The amount of fine could be from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh. FIR can be also filed against traders for storing and selling banned plastic items,” he said.
Officials said DMC has launched a special drive as per day 20 to 25 ton of banned plastic bags is found in 400 domestic waste collected per day in the city.
