Dhanbad, May 17: A stray dog created mayhem in the villages of Nirsa block, around 45 km away from district headquarters and injured 17 persons, including a two and half years old girl.

The medical officer in charge of Nirsa Community Health Centre (CHC), Dr Pushpa, said that all the injured were administered anti-rabies serum.  A two and half years old girl who was serious was referred to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad after first aid.

The report which reached the district headquarters said on late afternoon a stray dog went berserk and injured half a dozen people, mostly children in Kantand village under Benagoria Panchayat. When villagers chased it, the dog entered Chandurdih village and bit up several villagers there before being killed by the people.

The village chief called ambulances from Nirsa CHC and got the injured villagers of both villages admitted immediately.  The medical officer in charge Dr Pushpa Kumari treated them and sent seriously injured victims to Dhanbad medical college hospital.

The villagers said that some of the victims got treatment in private clinics for better treatment.  Arti Chitrakar, the two and half years old girl, who was admitted at SNMMCH, is said to be stable.

Though the dog which injured people has been killed, panic still prevails as villagers fear other stray dogs may go on berserk as well.

The Panchayat chief alleged that despite informing the block development office about the roaming of stray dogs in villages, no cognizance has been taken by concerned authorities.
