New Delhi, Aug 30: Abhijit Sen, an economist and former member of the Planning Commission, died on Monday night in New Delhi at the age of 72. He was one of the nation’s leading experts on rural economics.
“He suffered a heart attack around 11 pm. We rushed him to the hospital, but it was all over by the time we got there,” said Dr Pronab Sen, his brother.
Abhijit Sen had a more than four-decade career teaching economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and serving in a number of significant government roles, including chair of the Commission of Agricultural Cost and Prices.
Sen was born in New Delhi into a Bengali family. He attended St. Stephen’s College to earn an honours degree in physics after attending Sardar Patel Vidyalaya. In 1981, while a member of Trinity Hall at the University of Cambridge, he earned his PhD in economics.
From 2004 to 2014, he served on the Planning Commission, when Manmohan Singh was the prime minister.
