Chandigarh, April 14: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi in the illegal sand mining case in Jalandhar on Wednesday.
Channi was questioned for five hours on Wednesday afternoon at its zonal headquarters in Jalandhar. He was also summoned by the ED a few weeks earlier, but Channi did not appear in front of the agency.
“Former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi was today questioned by ED for over five hours in connection with an alleged illegal sand mining case. He was questioned in connection with his relationship with his nephew Bhupinder Singh Honey, who was arrested by the agency,” said ED officials.
Channi was unavailable for comment when approached. The ED may summon Channi again to assist in the probe, according to sources.
Notably, the ED raided the homes of the former CM’s nephew, Bhupinder Singh Honey, and his aides, including Kudrat Deep Singh, in Ludhiana and Mohali on January 17 and 18.
During the raids, the federal agency was able to recover ten crore rupees. Honey stated that the money he was arrested for was obtained through illegal sand mining and kickbacks for transfers and postings. Honey was apprehended by the central agency on February 3 and is currently being held in judicial custody. On March 31, the ED filed a chargesheet in a Jalandhar court charging Honey and Kudrat with money laundering in the illicit sand mining case.
