New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) will declare the schedule for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections on Tuesday (January 7) at 2 pm. The announcement will take place during a press conference, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated political battles of the year.
The term of the current 70-member Delhi Assembly concludes on February 23, necessitating elections to form a new government before that date.
Key Highlights of the Announcement
• In the 2020 elections, the schedule was announced on January 6, with polling held on February 8 and vote counting on February 11.
• The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, seeks a third consecutive term, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aims to wrest control of Delhi.
• Congress is gearing up for a strong fight, hoping to make a comeback after a decade of losses in Assembly elections.
Political Scenario
The AAP has been dominant in the last two Assembly elections, securing 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020. The BJP has struggled to break into double digits, while Congress has failed to win any seats since 2013.
Although AAP and Congress allied during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections under the INDIA bloc, they will contest the Assembly elections independently.
AAP’s Strategy
AAP, the first major party to announce its full list of candidates, has released its fourth and final list featuring 38 contenders. Arvind Kejriwal will contest from the New Delhi constituency for the fourth consecutive time, while Chief Minister Atishi will seek re-election from Kalkaji.
BJP’s Preparations
The BJP is actively campaigning against AAP, accusing it of corruption, particularly focusing on the liquor policy case that led to Kejriwal’s resignation in September.
