New Delhi, Aug 21: Anand Sharma, former Union minister and senior member of the Congress, said on Sunday that has resigned as chief of the ‘steering committee’ of the party’s Himachal Pradesh unit, days after veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad led a similar resignation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Before the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections, Sharma wrote to Congress President Sonia Gandhi stating that he felt excluded from the party’s pre-election choices and that his self-respect is ‘non-negotiable.’

A few days earlier, Azad, another member of the ‘G-23’ faction of Congress rebels, resigned from his positions as the campaign committee and political affairs panel chairman in Jammu and Kashmir. Sharma complained to the head of the Congress that he had been disregarded during the election-related consultation process. She was informed by him that he would still advocate for the state’s party candidates.
On April 26, the former federal minister and Congress deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha was chosen to lead the party’s ‘steering committee’ in Himachal Pradesh. Both Azad and Sharma are well-known members of the G-23 coalition, which has criticised the leadership of the party and demanded a major reform to turn around its deteriorating fortunes.
