Jaipur, March 31: Kirori Singh Bainsla, a Gurjar politician who lead agitations in Rajasthan to demand caste reservation in government jobs, died on Thursday at the age of 81. Vijay Bainsla, the Gurjar leader’s son, verified his father’s death. He said his father died in the early hours of the morning at a Jaipur hospital after a long illness.
Kirori Singh Bainsla’s protest marches frequently resulted in violent battles with civil authorities, as well as substantial property destruction. During a protest headed by Kirori Singh Bainsla in 2007, 27 people were killed in fights with police. Similarly, 43 individuals were killed in such incidents in May 2008, the majority of whom were demonstrators. During the agitation, the Gurjar leader accused the police for the violence and deaths.
Notably, Kirori Singh Bainsla, the leader of the ‘Gurjar Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti,’ gave the Ashok Gehlot government in Rajasthan an ultimatum in 2020 to accept their demands, including job and education reservation, by creating a “most backward class” (MBC) category for the caste, or face large-scale agitation.
The Rajasthan government on October 26, 2018, passed a bill that increased the ‘Other Backward Classes (OBC)’ quota from 21 per cent to 26 per cent. The Rajasthan government also approved one per cent reservation for Gurjars and four ‘Other Backward Castes (OBCs)’ in December 2018.
