Dhanbad, Aug 8: Highest rated player of the tournament Bhudeo Tripathi of Ranchi received a shock defeat from Anurag Jaiswal of Bengal in the sixth round of the FIDE rating chess championship being played at St Xavier Welfare Centre, Chaibasa.
With this win, Anurag Jaiswal (1708) along with Akshat Negi of Delhi (5.5 points each) climbed to the top position jointly after the completion of the sixth round.
Bhudeo Tripathi (1930 rating) had 4.5 points in five rounds. For continuing in the title race he had to win the sixth-round match at any cost, but he lost.
In another match, Akshat Negi (1644) defeated Rajesh Kumar (1797) of Jharkhand.
The sixth-round match of second seed Rohan Vijay Shandilya ( 1918 rating) and Aharsi Ghosh was in progress at the time of filing the report. Both players had 4 points each.
On the other board, Kishan Kumar of Bihar (5.5 points) defeated Devajan Sinha of Jharkhand. Kamal Kishore Deonath and Ranit Meity shared the points in the sixth round. Vidya Bhushan Singh and Vibhash Kumar Sinha (4.5 points each) also played draw while Bharat Singh and Tanisk Kumar (3.5 points each) also shared points.
Biswajit Chatterjee (4.5 points) playing with black pieces defeated Swastik Banerjee.
In the above 55 years event, Narendra Nath Pandey with 4 points is on the top in the title race.
West Singhbhum District Chess Association secretary Basant Khandelwal said that today two rounds of matches would be played and the final ceremony would be held in the evening.
District president Mukund Rungta, Marwari Yuva Manch president Mukesh Mittal, secretary Priyansu Kedia, Pawanj Khirwal, Jahangir Alam encouraged the participants in the sixth round.
