Ranchi, March 9: With an initiative to reduce the waiting list of patients in the Cardio-thoracic vascular surgery department of the RIMS, the department’s doctors have started managing both the OPD as well as surgery in a day.
Earlier, when a doctor would perform surgery, the OPD task for the doctor remained suspended. Following the trend of AIIMS Delhi where OPD patients are getting consultation along with two cardiac surgeries in every OT every working day, Dr Rakesh Kumar Choudhary not only looked after the OPD but also did an open heart surgery to save Ruhi Khatun (41), A resident of Bedo.
Dr Rakesh said that earlier she was being treated in the Department of Medicine at RIMS, from where she was referred to the CTVS department and the diagnosis revealed that her mitral valve was defective and the valve was leaking badly showing signs of heart failure.
“On Monday, after consulting 19 patients in the morning, I performed the open heart surgery and replaced the faulty valve with the most advanced type of artificial valve. Her left atrial appendage was closed internally, a first in the history of RIMS and considered an advanced technique in cardiac surgery,” Dr Rakesh added.
“After completing the surgery, I again consulted 11 patients and this is the first time that both OPD and surgery is being done in the CTVS department of RIMS,” Dr Rakesh further said.
“Ruhi is now doing well and is completely out of danger. In a few days she will be discharged from RIMS,” Dr Rakesh further added.
Md Nazrul Khan, son of Ruhi, said that she was suffering from chest pain and breathing issues for the past 1 year after which she was admitted to the medicine department at RIMS for treatment.
“After diagnosis, she was referred to the CTVS department and surgery was done here. She is doing well right now and according to the doctors we can take her home in a few days,” Khan said.
The surgery was performed by Dr Rakesh Kumar Choudhary and assisted by Dr Mukesh, Dr Nitesh, Dr Khushboo, Dr Pranay, Dr Preeti and Perfusionist Amit Kumar Singh. OT Assistants Shamim, Rajendra, Upendra, Goldie and Preeti played an important role in making the operation successful.
