Daltonganj, Oct 6: A suspended PDS leader named Sheonath Ram (50), who was shot at outside his house at Nawgarha police outpost on Tuesday (October 4), died before he could be admitted to MMCH Daltonganj the same day. This sparked a protest on the NH 75 on Wednesday where his family, friends, kin, and villagers demanded the arrest of the assailant Sanjay Singh.
Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Surjit Kumar said police have launched a massive manhunt for the assailant who is a co-villager of the deceased and has gone into hiding.
Family members of the deceased said Ram was shot at which proved fatal and had nothing to do with the public distribution system. Rather, he became a victim of a case that his family had lodged under the SC-ST Prevention of Atrocities Act against Sanjay Singh in the year 2020 and others following Singh’s humiliating the Ram family for being Dalit.
The SDPO said that the assailant on Tuesday went berserk as at first, the deceased’s younger brother Binay Ram was beaten up who had threatened the Singhs with a criminal case. After this, Sanjay rushed to Sheonath Ram and shot him who succumbed to multiple injuries.
The postmortem was conducted at MMCH Daltonganj where surgeon Dr Sanjay Kumar found two firearm injuries on the body of the deceased, one in the face and the other in his stomach. As per the doctor, the man was brought dead to the hospital.
