Kathmandu, Dec 23: French serial killer Charles Sobhraj walked out of jail in Nepal on Friday days after the country’s Supreme Court ordered his release.

Sobhraj, a 78-year-old serial killer, is suspected of killing more than 20 Western backpackers on the ‘hippie trail’ through Asia, usually by drugging their food or drink in the course of robbing them.

As per the information, the process of obtaining Sobhraj’s passport and visa is underway. The serial killer owns the passports of several countries, so the visa procedures can only begin after the French embassy identifies his real passport.

According to the police, Charles Sobhraj, infamously known as the ‘bikini killer’ was to be transferred to immigration detention ahead of his scheduled deportation to France.

Sobhraj had filed a petition to be released from jail and the court passed orders for his release on the grounds of his old age. The court had also approved his deportation within 15 days of his release.

The court ordered Sobhraj, who had heart surgery in 2017, should be released on health grounds after serving more than three-quarters of his sentence for murdering two North Americans in Nepal in the 1970s.

Charles Sobhraj was linked to a trail of backpacker deaths in Asia. He was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of murdering two American tourists when he travelled to Nepal in 2003.
