Ghibli-Style AI Art Trend: Creative Fun Or Digital Privacy Concern?

Ranchi: The Ghibli-style AI photo trend is currently going viral on social media, with people enthusiastically transforming their selfies into dreamy anime-style portraits inspired by Studio Ghibli’s iconic films. While this has become a source of amusement and aesthetic delight, experts are warning that this seemingly innocent trend could expose users to serious digital privacy threats.

AI-powered tools used for generating Ghibli-style images not only modify users’ photos but may also store them on remote servers. These platforms often retain uploaded images in their databases, which can later be used to train AI models. Many users remain unaware of how their data is being stored or used.

According to cybersecurity specialists, such trends promote large-scale storage of facial data, which could, in the long run, be exploited for deepfake creation, identity theft, or other cybercrimes. The lack of transparency in the privacy policies of many AI tools makes it difficult for users to track where and how their data might be used.

Uploading any personal image to these platforms can be risky, particularly if the platform is unverified or unfamiliar. Many AI image-generation services do not clearly state their data handling practices, making users vulnerable to unintended exploitation of their private information.

Experts emphasize that users must approach such online trends cautiously. What appears as harmless entertainment today could become a cause for concern in the future.

Here are some safety tips to protect your data while engaging with AI tools:

1. Read the privacy policy: Understand the terms and how your data will be used or stored.

2. Avoid uploading sensitive images: Refrain from using personal, family, or clearly identifiable pictures.

3. Check sharing settings: Make sure the tool isn’t sharing your images publicly or storing them indefinitely.

4. Use only trusted tools: Stick to AI platforms known for transparency and strong privacy standards.

5. Browse safely: Use secure networks and VPNs to mask your digital footprint.

AI creativity can be fun, but digital safety must not be ignored. Before participating in such trends, users should pause and consider the long-term implications of giving access to their facial data. A moment of caution today could save one from a potential cyber mishap tomorrow.
