New Delhi, Aug 17: Ghulam Nabi Azad, a senior Congress leader who has long been dissatisfied with the party, has resigned from a crucial party position in Jammu and Kashmir, signalling a rebellion within. Shortly after being appointed as the party’s campaign committee chairman, he left the position. Additionally, he left the political affairs committee for Jammu and Kashmir inside the party.

Considering that he is already a member of the party’s all-India political affairs committee, sources claimed that Azad perceived his nomination as a demotion. He is a seasoned politician who served as the previous state’s chief minister, was a union minister, and held other significant party positions.

He was also one of the 23 leaders who, two years ago, demanded organisational changes in an explosive letter to Sonia Gandhi, the party’s head.

Shortly after Ghulam Ahmed Mir, Azad’s close aide, was demoted from his position as the leader of the party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit, Azad resigned. Mir had resigned a month prior. In the Union Territory, the party made significant organisational changes and replaced Mir with Vikar Rasool Wani.

According to the news agency Press Trust of India, Sonia Gandhi also immediately created the campaign committee, political affairs committee, coordination committee, manifesto committee, publicity and publication committee, disciplinary committee, and Pradesh election committee.

Following the completion of the delimitation exercise and the finalisation of the electoral rolls, Jammu and Kashmir will hold its legislative elections. However, there are worries that this year’s elections won’t be able to be held since electoral roll modification and delimitation cannot be finished before the start of the harsh winter.

The election schedule has not yet been disclosed. The final publication date of the voter’s list, however, has lately been moved by the Election Commission to November 25. This would be the first voter list for the Union Territory following the redelimitation of assembly seat boundaries.
