Dumka: In a harrowing incident, three schoolchildren, including an eleven-year-old girl, were crushed to death by a goods train early on Saturday. The incident happened after they allegedly fell asleep on the tracks along the Dumka-Rampurhat route near Buchyam village under the Shikaripara police station limits of the district.

The head of Ajay Hembrom, according to the police, was found severed and lying at some distance along the tracks.

One of the girl companions of the deceased children who was also lying on the track, however, managed to jump aside after listening to the train’s horn and witnessing it approaching them fast.”

“I failed to raise alarm or for that matter save them as by the time I jumped off the track they were already crushed by the train,” Priya Murmu said to the police narrating the horrific incident.

It was only after some villagers spotted the dead bodies scattered around the track and informed the police the dead bodies were taken into custody and sent to the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.

The deceased children have been identified as Ajay Hembrom (16), and Simon Marandi (14), both belonging to Saharjori village and Albina Murmu (12) of nearby Durgapur village under Shikaripara police station itself and were students of the eleventh, eighth and fifth classes respectively.

The lone survivor of the incident Priya Murmu has been taken to the Shikaripara police station for questioning to ascertain what exactly led to the death of three other companions.

“They were all lying on the railway track assuming no train would ply and they fell asleep” the officer in-charge of the Shikaripara police station Arvind Singh said to reporters quoting the survival girl.

The incident meanwhile has sparked a sensation in a vast locality around the spot.
