Chennai: Tamil Nadu Assembly’s inaugural session on Monday witnessed a dramatic exit by Governor RN Ravi, who walked out alleging a breach of constitutional protocol and disrespect for the National Anthem. Chief Minister MK Stalin criticized the Governor’s action, calling it “childish” and accusing him of failing to fulfill his constitutional responsibilities.
The controversy stemmed from the omission of the National Anthem at the start of the session, where only the Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu, the state anthem, was sung. In a statement, Raj Bhavan alleged, “The Constitution of Bharat and the National Anthem were disrespected. Respecting the National Anthem is among the first Fundamental Duties outlined in the Constitution.”
The Governor reportedly urged CM Stalin and Speaker M Appavu to ensure the anthem was sung but alleged non-cooperation from them. This prompted his departure, which he described as an act of “deep anguish.”
Chief Minister Stalin Responds:
In a sharp rebuke, Stalin posted on X (formerly Twitter), “It is a constitutional tradition for the Governor to deliver the government’s address at the beginning of the year. His refusal to follow this tradition is childish and showcases his disregard for democratic practices.”
Stalin further questioned why the Governor, who he claimed repeatedly neglects his political and legal duties, continues to hold office. DMK allies also accused the Governor of attempting to undermine the Assembly session.
Ongoing Tensions:
Leader of the House Duraimurugan clarified that Tamil Nadu traditionally plays the National Anthem at the end of the Governor’s address, not at the start. “The Governor’s actions today were unwarranted, and he refused to read the prepared address,” he said.
The Assembly session was also marked by disruptions from opposition parties. AIADMK members demanded action on a sexual assault case at Anna University, leading to marshals intervening to restore order. Congress members walked out, accusing the Governor of acting against Tamil Nadu’s interests, while BJP and PMK leaders staged protests over the same university issue.
