New Delhi, March 28: The Supreme Court will hear a request by the Hindu parties to merge all lawsuits concerning the Gyanvapi-Kashi Vishwanath issue currently being heard in a Varanasi court on April 21.
Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain presented the matter for urgent listing before a bench consisting of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justices PS Narasimha, and JB Pardiwala.
According to Jain, the Varanasi District Court has not issued a ruling on the matter.
The petitioner received a guarantee from the supreme court that the case would not be deleted from the list on the upcoming date of the hearing.
The Gyanvapi issue began when Hindu devotees petitioned a civil court, arguing that because the Gyanvapi Mosque was formerly a Hindu temple and still housing Hindu idols, they should be allowed to worship.
A survey of the mosque by an advocate commissioner was mandated by the civil court. After conducting the videotaped survey, the advocate commissioner provided a report to the civil court. Based on the survey report, the Muslim parties contested the Hindu parties’ assertion that one of the objects found at the site was a Shivling and asserted that it was simply a water fountain.
