Lucknow, May 12: Varanasi court on Thursday ordered the Gyanvapi mosque survey to be completed and the findings presented by May 17. The order was issued one day after the hearing on the petition to remove the court-appointed advocate commissioner in charge of the survey was completed.

The court determined that the entire space, including the basement, will be surveyed and videographed while hearing the plea on whether a survey could be undertaken within the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi. Along with Ajay Mishra, the court appointed a second court commissioner, Vishal Kumar Singh.

The authorities were earlier ordered to produce a report by May 10 by the local court.

Notably, a court-appointed delegation was barred from conducting a study and videography of the mosque compound last Friday. The mosque’s management and a group of Muslim men refused to let the team in and mounted a protest.

A Varanasi court had previously ordered the videographic survey in response to a petition filed by five Delhi-based ladies seeking permission to worship Hindu deities whose idols are located on the outer wall of Gyanvapi Masjid on a daily basis. Currently, the location is only open for prayers once a year.
