Hazaribag, Aug 22: Punam Tana Bhagat (20) has changed the perception of all as she is the first from her community doing a course in fashion designing. A resident of Saraiya village in the industrial town Tandwa of Chatra, she is the first from the Tana Bhagat community to pursue this course. Punam who is in her third year of a fashion designing course at Hazaribag’s K.B Women’s College said her approach towards education has even changed the atmosphere of her house as well.
Punam said she has two elder sisters and a brother doing jobs in Central Coalfields Limited (CCL). Her father Sundar Tana Bhagat is a heavy vehicle driver. All got the job in lieu of the land acquired by CCL for its coal mining project.
Punam said after completing the course, she wants to become a known fashion designer. She said that her village and her family speak the Kuduk language at home. She said there is an atmosphere of happiness in the village and the surrounding area after they came to know that she is an undergraduate in three years fashion designing course. “My brother Kameshwar and two sisters, Saraswati and Sita, are working in the office of CCL,” she added.
Shankantuala Kumari, who is the coordinator of this college in Hazaribag, told Lagatar24.com that Punam is one of the 30 students doing this three-year course comprising six semesters. She said the per semester charge is Rs12,500. Shakuntala said there are two teachers in this faculty including Jaweta Kumar Roy and Shweta. “Even infrastructure-wise, we have everything for students here”, she added.
Jaweta said Punam is a very good student and different from others. She is a perfectionist and wants to popularise the local arts of this area, she added. For the first time, we are organising a fashion show in the last week of this month in the college, where Punam will also show her skill, she added.
Punam told Lagatar24.com that she had completed her matriculation from Saraswati Shishu Mandir in Bachra of Piparwar in Chatra. “I did intermediate from the same school with its wing at Dakra. I was not a good student but after getting admission in fashion designing, I started giving my 100% which upgraded my knowledge and skill as well”, she said. “But my drawing was good from the initial days only and now it’s helping me here”, she added. Punam said she wants to go to another city for a higher course in fashion designing. Before signing off, she said, “I know I am the first to do this course from my community which makes me proud”.
