Bengaluru: The Health Ministry has confirmed the first three cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in India, sparking public health concerns. An eight-month-old child currently under treatment, a three-month-old recently discharged in Bengaluru, and a two-month-old in Ahmedabad have tested positive for HMPV. The development comes amidst an ongoing HMPV outbreak in China, where multiple respiratory viruses, including influenza A, COVID-19, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, are contributing to a surge in hospitalizations.
HMPV, identified in 2001, is a respiratory virus that can cause flu-like symptoms. Young children under five years, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at heightened risk of severe illness.
Symptoms of HMPV
•Cough
•Fever
•Nasal congestion
•Shortness of breath
•Sore throat
Symptoms typically appear three to six days after exposure. Severe cases may require hospitalization due to complications such as wheezing and significant breathing difficulties.
Transmission of HMPV
HMPV is highly contagious and spreads through:
•Direct contact with infected individuals
•Contaminated surfaces
•Respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing
Treatment and Vaccination
Currently, there is no vaccine for HMPV. Treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms. Individuals with severe symptoms should seek immediate medical assistance.
Differentiating HMPV from the Common Cold
HMPV symptoms often mimic those of the common cold but can escalate in severity, particularly during the initial infection. Subsequent infections tend to be milder.
Prevention Tips for HMPV
To minimize the risk of HMPV and other respiratory illnesses, follow these preventive measures:
•Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
•Cover your mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing.
•Wear a mask in crowded or high-risk areas.
•Avoid contact with sick individuals.
•Refrain from touching your face with unwashed hands.
•Practice self-isolation if unwell.
Individuals with preexisting lung conditions should exercise extra caution and adhere to all preventive guidelines to avoid severe complications.
