Beirut, Lebanon: Four Israeli soldiers were killed in a drone strike by Hezbollah on Sunday at a military base in Binyamina, located near Haifa, Israel. The attack occurred as Israel intensified its bombardment of Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, with ongoing clashes reported between Israeli forces and militants across the border. Emergency services confirmed that more than 60 individuals were injured in the assault.
The strike on the military training camp is the deadliest attack on an Israeli base since September 23, as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah continues to escalate. The incident follows increased Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and comes as the fighting extends beyond the group’s strongholds in southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah Claims Responsibility for Deadly Drone Attack
Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, claimed responsibility for launching “a squadron of attack drones” targeting the Binyamina camp, about 30 kilometers south of Haifa. The group stated the attack was in retaliation for recent Israeli airstrikes that, according to Lebanon’s health ministry, resulted in at least 22 deaths in central Beirut.
In response to the strike, Hezbollah issued a warning to Israel, stating that “what it witnessed today in southern Haifa is nothing compared to what awaits it if it continues its aggression.”
Ongoing Clashes and Rising Death Toll
The conflict has intensified, with Israel’s air force targeting Hezbollah’s rocket launchers, anti-tank missile posts, and weapons storage facilities in Lebanon. On the ground, Israeli soldiers reportedly eliminated dozens of militants, according to Israel’s military. The National News Agency of Lebanon (NNA) confirmed Israeli airstrikes in several border villages, with five people reported dead in Mayfadoun near Nabatiyeh.
Hezbollah forces have clashed with Israeli troops attempting to infiltrate villages along the border, as the group continues to fire rockets and drones into Israel in support of Hamas militants in Gaza.
UN Peacekeepers Caught in the Crossfire
United Nations peacekeepers from the UNIFIL mission reported further clashes in southern Lebanon. Israeli forces reportedly breached a UN position with two tanks, prompting international condemnation. Five peacekeepers have been injured since the conflict began, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that such attacks could constitute war crimes.
The situation remains tense, with global calls for de-escalation. French President Emmanuel Macron urged Iran to support peace efforts in Lebanon and Gaza during a phone call with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian.
