Dhanbad July 11: IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) on Monday held a day-long workshop on Vedic Mathematics at the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre (GJLT) in which renowned Vedic Mathematician Ravi Kumar Iyer, explained its benefits.
During his two-hour keynote address delivered with the help of PowerPoint presentation, he unravelled the tricks of additions, subtractions, multiplications and 16 sutras and 13 subsutras. He also gave a detailed account of the history of Vedic Mathematics.
The workshop was organized by the Department of Mathematics and Computing of IIT (ISM) during which deputy director Prof Dheeraj Kumar, Prof MK Singh, Dean of Student Welfare; Prof Sunil Kumar, Department of Mining Engineering and Vinayak Kumar were also present.
Explaining the benefits of Vedic Mathematics, Iyer said it improves the calculation speed in mathematics, reduces fear of mathematics, serves as a magical tool to reduce scratch work and is useful in cracking competitive exams.

While giving a detailed account of the history of Indian Mathematics he also gave details of a chronological account of India’s history beginning from 16000 BP (Before Present) when the earliest presence of humans in India is known.
“The presence of ancient artefacts as well as the submerged remains of ancient Dwarka found during the excavation by underwater archaeologists proves the rich history of ancient India,” said Iyer, who is an advisor of Chennai Centre for Global Studies.
He did his engineering in Chennai in 1970 and later worked in M/S Tata Consulting Engineers and M/S Larsen & Toubro for five years.
He also shed light on the life and work of renowned mathematician, Dattatreya Ramchandra Kaprekar who discovered a number of results in number theory and described various properties of numbers.
He also asked students and faculty members to question on Vedic Mathematics tricks.
