Islamabad, April 13: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, announced that it will boycott any meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security that may look into the cable that allegedly revealed a plot to overthrow their government, and demanded that the country’s Supreme Court form an inquiry commission into the matter.
The decision came after a meeting of the PTI’s political committee, which also called for general elections as soon as possible and launched a series of rallies to galvanise the party’s support base, according to Dawn.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan presided over the meeting, which was attended by all of the party’s provincial presidents, Secretary-General Asad Umer, Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and other leaders, including Fawad Chaudhry.
Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s new Prime Minister, promised a parliamentary investigation into the ‘international conspiracy’ to destabilise Imran Khan’s administration in his inaugural statement to the National Assembly on Monday, and pledged to quit if there is even a crumb of proof to support the charge.
Notably, Shehbaz Sharif the President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and a former leader of the Opposition, was elected as Pakistan’s 23rd Prime Minister by the country’s National Assembly on Monday, just days after former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government was ousted from power in a no-confidence vote following a series of dramatic political events.
