New Delhi: The Opposition INDIA bloc has triumphed in 10 of the 13 seats contested in the recent bypolls across seven states, reaffirming their strong performance from the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP, which secured a historic third term at the Centre last month, managed to win only two seats.
In Punjab, AAP’s Mohinder Bhagat emerged victorious in the Jalandhar West constituency, winning by a margin of over 23,000 votes. Meanwhile, in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) swept all four seats, solidifying their regional dominance.
Himachal Pradesh saw a notable victory for Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who won the Dehra constituency. The Congress further cemented its position by winning the Nalagarh seat, while the BJP secured a win in Hamirpur.
Chief Minister Sukhu celebrated the win, stating, “The people of Himachal Pradesh have given a befitting reply to those conspiring to topple the government. This victory is a testament to the awareness and resolve of our citizens.”
In Tamil Nadu, the DMK’s Anniyur Siva clinched the Vikravandi assembly seat by a significant margin of nearly 60,000 votes. The Congress won both seats in Uttarakhand, while the BJP’s Kamslesh Pratap Shahi won the Amarwar seat in Madhya Pradesh.
In Bihar’s Purnea, independent candidate Shankar Singh won the Rupauli assembly bypoll, defeating JD(U)’s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal by a margin of 8,246 votes.
These bypolls were the first since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP won 240 seats, 32 short of a majority. However, the NDA managed to cross the halfway mark with a total tally of 293 seats, while the Congress-led INDIA bloc secured 232 seats.
The recent bypoll results highlight the shifting political landscape and the growing influence of the INDIA bloc in various states. As the political dynamics continue to evolve, these victories could have significant implications for future elections and governance in India.
