New Delhi, Dec 18: The Mormugao stealth-guided missile destroyer was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Sunday. At the commissioning event in Mumbai, attendees included Goa’s chief minister Pramod Sawant, Admiral R. Hari Kumar, the head of the Navy, and defence minister Rajnath Singh.
According to Rajnath Singh, the commissioning of the warship will increase India’s maritime supremacy. He referred to the INS Mormugao as the most cutting-edge vessel.
He also said that according to experts, the Indian economy is one of the top five in the world and will be among the top three in 2027.
The launching of the warship on the eve of Goa Liberation Day, according to the head of the Navy, is a sign of the significant advancements made in warship design and building capability over the past ten years.
INS The second of the four destroyers in the ‘Visakhapatnam’ class, Mormugao was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai after being designed by the in-house Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy.
On December 19, 2021, Goa celebrated 60 years of independence from Portuguese domination and Mormugao, a ship bearing the same name, made her first sea sortie. Mormugao is named after the storied port city of Goa on the West Coast.
The battleship is fully equipped with advanced, cutting-edge sensors and armaments, including surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles.
