New Delhi, Feb 3: BCCI president Sourav Ganguly confirmed on Thursday that the India Premier League (IPL) 2022 will be entirely hosted in India.

With two new clubs, Lucknow Super Giants and Ahmedabad joining the fight, the IPL 2022 will include at least 74 league games, bringing the total number of teams in the T20 tournament to ten.

Meanwhile, in an interview, Ganguly disclosed that the league stage matches of the IPL 2022 will be held in Mumbai and Pune. While a decision on the playoffs venue will be taken at a later stage, Ahmedabad could be the front-runner.

“It will be held in India this year, until and unless COVID-19 hits the roof. We are looking at hosting the matches in Maharashtra – Mumbai and Pune. We will then take a call on the venue for the knockout stages,” said Ganguly.

The 2020 edition and the second half of the 2021 tournament were held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The BCCI has chosen four home sites this year: the Wankhede and Brabourne Stadiums in Mumbai, the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, and the MCA Stadium in Gahunje, Pune. The change will limit travel and may aid in the preservation of the bio-bubble.

The board has informed the franchisees of the board’s efforts to keep the IPL in India.

On February 12-13, Bengaluru will host the IPL Auction, which will feature two new clubs. The IPL 2022 will run two months, starting in the final week of March and ending in the last week of May.

The mega IPL Auction, with two new teams, will be held in Bengaluru on February 12-13.  The IPL 2022 will be a two-month-long affair which is set to begin in the last week of March and will go on until May end, confirmed by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah last month.
