Ranchi: Jharkhand minister Dr. Irfan Ansari has raised strong objections to the appointment of West Bengal’s former Chief Electoral Officer as the state’s Chief Secretary, writing to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and demanding his intervention in the matter.
Appointment Raises Questions on Electoral Fairness
In his letter, Dr. Ansari argued that appointing an officer who conducted elections to such a senior administrative post sends a dangerous message to the public — that officials involved in the election process can be rewarded politically. He said this raises serious questions about the impartiality of constitutional institutions and the integrity of the electoral process.
BJP Accused of Weakening Constitutional Bodies
Ansari alleged that BJP is continuously attempting to weaken constitutional institutions. He described the misuse of investigative agencies, pressure on institutions, and the appointment of election-related officials to key posts as alarming signs for democracy. He emphasised that this issue is not limited to West Bengal alone but concerns the democratic fabric of the entire country.
Appeal to Rahul Gandhi to Unite Opposition
The minister urged Rahul Gandhi to take the matter seriously and rally the entire opposition to raise a united voice against the decision. He warned that if such decisions are not challenged in time, both democratic institutions and the Constitution will continue to be weakened. He also demanded that pressure be mounted on BJP to reverse the appointment.
