Ottawa: Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh strongly criticized outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after his announcement to resign as the leader of the ruling Liberal Party. Singh, a former ally of Trudeau, accused the Prime Minister of failing Canadians and allowing “corporate greed to run wild.”
In a statement following Trudeau’s resignation, Singh said, “Justin Trudeau’s Liberals let down Canadians. They let you down on home prices. They let you down on health care. They let you down by allowing corporate greed to run wild.”
Singh Criticizes Liberal Party Leadership
Singh argued that Trudeau’s leadership failures extended beyond the Prime Minister, pointing fingers at the entire Liberal Party. “It’s every Liberal MP that looked down their nose at Canadians worried about high costs or crumbling health care. The Liberals do not deserve another chance, no matter who is the leader,” Singh emphasized.
The NDP leader’s frustration with Trudeau grew in recent months, especially over rising grocery prices and health care issues. In September 2024, the NDP withdrew its support for Trudeau’s minority government, significantly destabilizing the ruling party ahead of the 2025 general elections.
Response to Conservative Party Policies
Singh also targeted the opposition Conservative Party, warning of their potential return to power under leader Pierre Poilievre. He accused the Conservatives of prioritizing CEOs over citizens, stating, “Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives will cut from people to give more to CEOs. They will cut health care, pensions, dental care.”
Singh urged Canadians to unite against the Conservatives, saying, “People who oppose callous Conservative cuts to health care and everyone who opposes the rich getting richer while everyone else falls further behind, I’m asking them all to stand together this time to stop the Conservatives.”
Political Turmoil Ahead of Elections
Trudeau’s resignation comes after Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland’s departure over disputes concerning US tariffs. The Liberal Party now faces significant challenges, with both the Conservatives and the NDP vying to capitalize on Trudeau’s political decline.
