Jamshedpur, Oct 1: A contingent of 50 lady cops has been dedicated to keeping hoodlums at bay during the four-day-long Puja, instilling much confidence among the girls and young women in the steel city.
Equipped with wireless sets and firearms, the lady cops will be moving on two-wheelers across the city during the Puja revelry and will remain vigilant against the antisocial elements who tend to molest girls in crowded areas and isolated places amidst the grand festivity.
Revealing the move which has been taken by the district police for the first time in Jamshedpur, superintendent of police (City) K Vijay Shankar said the main purpose behind the step is to provide a sense of security among the Puja revelry, especially among the girls and young women.
“There are 50 woman constables who will be riding on 25 two-wheelers – two cops on a vehicle. In each of the police station areas, there will be four or six lady cops, depending on the density of the population and strategic location,” said Vijay Shankar while talking to lagatar24. com.
The City SP said in the event of any thug or group of anti-social elements coming to the notice of the mobile lady cops, the latter will try to prevent the mischievous act on their own.
“If the situation seems to be beyond the control of the lady cops, then they will inform the control room immediately for mobilisation of the police force so that the trouble creators can be taken to task effectively, ” he explained.
The senior police officer pointed out the mobile lady cops will also keep Marine Drive and parts of NH-33 where hardly any Durga Puja is organised but the thoroughfares remain bustled with commuters.
The continent of the mobile lady cops will start their rounds this afternoon and continue till midnight on October 4.
A trial run of this mobile lady cops contingency was already carried out with the senior SP, Prabhat Kumar and City SP flagging off it from the police control room on Friday evening.
During the four-day-long Puja, lakhs of people tend to hit the roads in their pursuit of pandal-hopping. As over 300 public Pujas are organised here, several of them grandeur pandals, people wish to visit the pandals in large numbers thus giving the anti-social elements an opportunity to target girls and young women. The police administration, however, has to remain on its toe while maintaining law and order as well as vehicular traffic management during the festivity.
