Jamshedpur, Aug 17: Over a dozen distilleries were destroyed in a joint drive conducted by police and Jharkhand Excise at the suburban Birsanagar Thana area on Thursday.

While destroying the distilleries, the police and the Excise department officials seized about 1,500 illicit country-made liquor and a huge quantity of raw materials for manufacturing the liquor.

These apart, the police and the Excise Department officials have seized equipments used in liquor manufacturing from the sites of the razed distilleries.

Aimed at making the steel city illicit liquor-free city, the move of the joint drive was taken by the senior SP Prabhat Kumar.

“Unauthorised liquor traders tend to run a racket of promoting manufacturing illicit country-made liquor at the fringe area of the city and get the stuff sold in the slum areas inside it. Consumption of sub-standard liquor causes serious health problems and also prompts consumers to indulge in anti-social activities. We have taken a decision to eliminate the menace of the supply and sale of country-made liquor from the city. Destroying of the distilleries in a joint drive by the police and Excise department is the first step towards eliminating this menace, ” said Kumar while talking to the newsmen.

The senior SP said that as a large number of police and Excise department officials were engaged in the joint drive, those indulged in liquor manufacturing managed to escape from the spot.

“We have, however, identified the elements indulged in the unauthorised liquor manufacturing activities.  Such people will be in the police net soon, ” the senior police officer pointed out.
