Those arrested were identified as Ashif Hussain, a resident of Azadnagar, and Sachin Singh and Karan Bhuiyan, both residents of the Sitaramdera Thana area.

Revealing about the breakthrough, Superintendent of Police (City) Rishabh Garg said that the Azadnagar police had set up a checking point on the Old Purulia Road while carrying out an anti-crime drive late on Friday night.

“During the checking drive, at about 11.00 pm, the police stopped a Scooty rider who was speeding away towards Azadnagar from the Mango side. The Scooty rider later identified as Ashif Hussain first tried to evade the checking but was compelled to stop. On being asked to show the vehicle’s paper, Ashif confessed that it was a stolen Scooty. On searching into the dicky the police found a loaded pistol in it,” said Garg while addressing a press conference on Saturday evening.

The police seized the pistol as well as the Scooty while arresting the criminal.

Regarding another incident, the City SP said around midnight, the police got a tip-off that a couple of criminals were on a looting spree near the crematorium in Bhuiyandih.  He said getting the information, a police party rushed to the spot to find it to be true as two men, including one holding a loaded pistol, were standing along the Bhuiyandih-Agrico road apparently waiting for their prey.

“Soon the police party nabbed the two and seized the pistol.  On being interrogated, the duo confessed that they used to rob passersby at gunpoint late in the night regularly, ” the senior police officer stated.  He pointed out the two were arrested and seized the pistol.

The City SP asserted that the police will continue to carry on the anti-crime checking on a regular basis so that criminals may remain at bay during the ensuing Durga Puja.
