Jaya Verma Sinha appointed as first woman Chairman, CEO of Railway Board

New Delhi, Aug 31: Jaya Verma Sinha, a member of the Indian Railway Management Services (IRMS), was appointed chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Railway Board on Thursday by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

The appointment will be in place starting on September 1 and continuing until her superannuation.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Smt. Jaya Verma Sinha, Indian Railway Management Services (IRMS), Member (Operations and Business Development), Railway Board to the post of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Railway Board in the Apex scale [Pay Level-17 as per 7th CPC] for a period w.e.f. the date of assumption of charge on or after 01.09.2023, till the date of her superannuation and her re-employment on the post we.f. 01.10.2023 till 31.08.2024 on usual terms and conditions, or until further orders. whichever is earlier,” the notice read.

Prior to this, Sinha served on the Railway Board as a Member (Operations and Business Development).

After the horrific Balasore accident, which claimed nearly 300 lives, she was at the center of the railroads’ explanation of the intricate signaling system.

Sinha joined the Indian Railway Traffic Service in 1988 and worked for the Eastern, South-East and Northern Railways.
