Jharkhand govt orders to remove ‘Urdu’ from names of non-Urdu schools

Ranchi, Aug 2: The Jharkhand Primary Education Department issued an order on August 1, directing all non-Urdu medium schools to remove ‘Urdu’ words with immediate effect. Additionally, the state education department ordered that in non-Urdu medium schools weekly off will be on Sunday rather than Friday and such schools will continue to hold their morning prayers.

The Jharkhand education department directed the relevant schools to abide by these directives with immediate effect, and required measures will be taken against any school or anybody who disobeyed the rules.

“Except for the notified Urdu school, in which the word Urdu has been added, the word ‘Urdu’ should be removed from the part of that school with immediate effect. Weekly holidays on Sundays should be ensured except for notified Urdu Schools, and the mid-day meal should be operated on Sundays,” reads the order signed by Secretary of DOSE&L Rajesh Kumar Sharma.

According to the reports, the state’s education department discovered that several schools in Jamtara were renaming themselves from primary schools to Urdu high schools. After an investigation, similar cases were discovered in Palamu, Ranchi, Dhanbad and other districts. The primary education department issued the circular on Monday and instructed the schools to abide by the guidelines in light of this.
