Ranchi, Feb.8: Hearing in the petition challenging local language status to Urdu, Oriya and Bangla in Jharkhand and allowing only those to appear in Jharkhand Staff Selection (JSSC) Examination who passed their matriculation and intermediate from Jharkhand has been deferred till February 16.
The development in the Jharkhand High Court took place after a Supreme Court lawyer P Patwalia argued in favour of the new rule.
The division bench comprising Chief Justice Dr Ravi Ranjan and Justice Sujeet Narayan Prasad while deferring the hearing asked Patwalia to produce all Supreme Court orders related to the matter on next hearing.
A state resident Ramesh Hansda has challenged the rule saying how students who had studied in Hindi and English medium schools of the state will be badly affected by this rule. He submitted before the court that Urdu has been given local language status while Hindi has not though the majority of students in the state speak Hindi.
Hansda contended that Urdu has been given local language status to favour a particular community while Hindi has not been given that status to deprive the larger section who have studied in Hindi medium in the school.
The petition on the provision of giving only those candidates in the JSSC examination who have passed matriculation and intermediate examination from schools in the state said that it is a violation of constitutional rights. Apart from this, the petitioner contended that the rule does not apply to local youths who studied outside the state for better knowledge.
