Ranchi, Sept 1: Apart from witnessing the highest number of communal riots in India in 2021, Jharkhand also saw the highest rate of murder among the 36 states and Union Territories, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The rate of murder per one lakh population was highest in Jharkhand at 4.1, while the all India average was 2.1. Jharkhand saw 1,573 cases with the number of victims being 1,606 in 2021. The mid-year projected population has been taken as 3.86 crore.
It may be noted that this is despite the number of murder cases falling in Jharkhand. In 2020, the number of murder cases was 1,592. And, a year before that it was 1,626 in 2019, as per the recently released NCRB’s ‘Crime in India 2021’ report.
The main reasons behind the murders in Jharkhand has been for gain (480), personal enmity (220), disputes related to property, family and money (317), love affairs (57), illicit relationship (42), dowry (42), political reasons (21) and honour killing (8).
After Jharkhand, the states and Union Territories that witnessed rate of murder higher than 3.0 are Andaman and Nicobar Islands (4.0), Haryana (3.8), Chhattisgarh (3.4), Assam (3.4), Arunachal Pradesh (3.2), Odisha (3.0) and Tripura (3.0).
All India, there were 29,272 number of murder cases with 30,132 victims in 2021. The number of cases was 29,193 in 2020. The highest numbers of cases were recorded in Uttar Pradesh (3,806), Bihar (3,138) and Maharashtra (2,142) last year, data showed.
