Jamshedpur, Sept 2: Jharkhand is set to witness its first bird species documentation report that would help environment enthusiasts understand the present ecology and help in the conservation of species that are endangered or even threatened.
The Bombay Natural History Society, Tata Steel Zoological Park and Sylvan, a group of retired forest officers of Jharkhand, shall be sharing technical expertise and facilitating the entire district-wise process to complete the documentation by the end of this year.
District-wise chapters of the Citizen Group of Jharkhand Birders have already been formed to streamline the documentation process. The published report is expected by the end of this year. An orientation meet has already taken place at the Tata Steel Zoological Park last Sunday.
“This is for the first time post-independence that this sort of bird species documentation is taking place. The report shall help us understand the ecology. There may be many species that are new and maybe some which are threatened or endangered. Knowing the scenario shall also help our conservation of the concerned species,” said the director of Tata Steel Zoological Park, Bipul Chakrabarty.
Although experts say that there were a couple of city-wise studies that had happened earlier, this is the first time that district chapters have been created that shall follow a standard procedure to complete the work. The group currently has 100 members.
Once the comprehensive report is published, it shall be shared with schools, colleges and other educational institutions. This shall also motivate young children to take a bird watching as a hobby.
“Bird watching is an absolute joy for many while for some it is a meditative experience. This apart it also develops the habit of documentation, understanding the diversity and building one’s ecological knowledge,” said Chakrabarty.
